WJP #067 - The Round Table - Men's Club Version

Posted on Jan. 29, 2008 at 9:55 PM in Entertainment
As any regular reader of my blog knows, I often write about what me and the boys are sitting around kickin' it about and if I think it was interesting enough, I share with the class - that being y'all...

But first - some random thoughts, rants, raves and whathaveyous.

THE METS GOT JOHAN SANTANA!!!!! EAT THAT, YANKEE FANS!!!! Whew, that felt good! Now if we can pull off getting Livan Hernandez also, I'll dance the super duper once of a lifetime happy dance...

Is it me or does rap music need a shot of something? Yeah, Ghostface represented (and yeah Ghost, I not only purchased your CD on iTunes, I went out and bought an actual CD also - You got me twice, dun...) but for the most part, shit is kinda, well, quiet. I've been bumpin' dat new Joe Budden Mood Muzik 3.5, but I Stan for Joey sooooo....

Nas needs to come out with that "Nigger" quick fast...

It's Black History Month - uh huh - yeah, okay. Does that mean direct to DVD bullshit on BET all month? Speaking of BET....

The Boondocks will not have their 15 episode season because two of the episodes targeted BET and they allegedidly threatened to sue Sony and Sony punked up. The episodes, "The Hunger Strike" and "The Uncle Ruckus Show" were gonna set BET's sorry ass on fire. Color me depressed.

For my comic book fans - CAPTAIN AMERICA IS BACK!!! Now, read what I said - Cap is back - I didn't say Steve Rogers is back. Seems Bucky Barnes aka Winter Soldier is taking the mantle. I'm in favor of this. Oh yeah, "One More Day" happened (BOOOOOOO!!!!) and led into "Brand New Day" which led me to canceling my Amazing Spider-Man subscription. Dumbest storyline ever. Damn crime is what it was....

Meanwhile, Marvel as a company redeemed itself with the X-Men crossover - The Messiah Complex. When it comes out in trade format - cop that.

LOST IS BACK!!!! There is hope. Speaking of hope - hopefully two to four weeks and the writers strike should be ending. Bout damn time...

Okay, to the main of this post - me and the boys were talking sports and we got started on movies and then what movies made you tear up or got emotional in some major way? So, I thought this would make a good list:

What movie or television show moved you? In no particular order, here's my top list:

Brian's Song: The first half sets you up to give a damn and then the second half rips you apart. It's bad enough when Jimmy Caan's Brian Piccalo dies, but then Billy Dee Williams' speech as Gayle Sayers - that shit wasn't fair. I was fucked up over that shit.

Field Of Dreams: "Hey dad, you wanna play catch?" Yeah, that did it, turn on the faucet - I was done. So was most of the males in the audience.

Scarface: Come on - how many scenes did you scream at the screen? The scene that got me is when he capped Manny. I knew he was done then. The desk scene was just plain fucked up.

The Magnificent Seven: I was going crazy when they started getting killed. It was my first experience with seeing stars get killed in a movie like that. The death I was pissed at was Coburn's....

Foxy Brown: Pam Grier nude. I was only a lil' one, but I knew I wanted that. I might not have known what to truly do with that, but I had a damn good idea....lol.

100 Rifles: I knew what I wanted to do with Rachel Welsh, but Jim Brown beat me to it...lol. It was also the first time I conciously realized that big deal about an interracial relationship was just bullshit. I knew right then and there it didn't matter who you loved because love knew no color. You'd think if a child could figure that out, the rest of the world could too. Go figure.

The Wire: One of the few tv shows that got me crazy a couple of times. Wallace's death. D'Angelo's death. Stringer's death (I cheered so loud, I woke my wife). Bodie's death and the scene before on the park bench with McNulty (I knew Bodie wasn't long for this world when that scene kicked in. It was like Simon was giving him one helluva send off.) Prop Joe's death - I want Marlo so dead for that one.

Cornbread, Earl & Me/Cooley High: The endings of those two movies killed me. I kept asking why? That was fucked up.

The Warriors: You ever have a moment when you literally jump up and want to see the shit kicked out of someone on screen? When that little shit started clinking those bottles and saying, "Warriors... come out and plaaay..". I wanted to jump thru the screen and fuck him up my damn self.

The Godfather part one: Sonny's death. Talk about overkill. We talked about that shit for months.

New Jack City: "I wanna shoot you so bad my dick is hard." All I could think was "Me too, Ice, me too. Cap that bitch-ass motherfucker."

Miami Vice: After it jumped the freakin' shark with that whole Sonny turns into Burnett bullshit, they came back with one of the coolest endings ever to a series. That bar scene with Lyle Lovett's "Cryin' Shame" playing in the background when Crockett and Tubbs basically agree to go on a suicide mission. That was the best acting those two had done in three years. Then the ending with Crockett giving Tubbs a ride in his stolen Ferrarri. Classic shit.

The Sopranos: Big Pussy's demise. Brilliant shit. Damn shame about that bullshit series ending. Ruined the whole series for me.

Deep Cover: When Fishburne's character comes to realization that he's a better drug dealer than he is a cop. Then the kid's momma dies and Linc form Mod Squad comes up on him with that bullshit and Fish schools him with the Junkie's Poem. Cold shit but it hits the heart.

The Natural: When Redford hits the home run into the lights and his wound opens up and you know he's done. It's like watching your hero saddle up for the last time.

In The Heat Of The Night: When the old white guy slaps Sidney and he slaps him back. The look on Rod Steiger's face is hilarious and oh so telling at the same time. It was one of the first times the racial divide hit me thru a movie.

Roots: The whole damn thing but especially when they whipped Kunta Kinte to make him change his name. I didn't even realize I was crying until my mother started wiping my face....

We had some others but those were more like "Oh Shit!" moments than true emotional ones.

So, what movies/tv shows truly moved you?

WJP #054 - The Best Of 2007 - A Prequel of sorts....

Posted on Dec. 15, 2007 at 4:07 PM in Entertainment
Didn't I say I was gonna go all in? Did I not say that? Ya'll thought Slade was yankin' your chain, didn't ya? I said I got my blog mojo back.

It came back with a vengeance....

I've never been one that ignored the popular. Call me shallow, but I've always argued that it's popular for a freakin' reason. It touches something in many people. At the same time, I do have standards to adhere to. One of which is quality, which is why I'll never be a Britney Spears fan in terms of her music. I respect her gangster, no doubt. The girl knows how to get on her grind when she has to. She knows how to pick hit music (or at least is smart enough to know when to shut up and let someone guide her to it...). She is an incredible dancer and performer when she wants to be. That MTV debacle was a Britney who really didn't care and while some of you might think the comparison is unfair, she's close to Amy Winehouse levels in terms of hitting rock bottom. The same as everyone has their ceiling, everyone also has their basement. Brit is close to her basement, let's just hope she can rise above...

Still, even in her heyday, I wasn't a fan. I would rather hear Christina simply because you can hear that girl can sing. In terms of sheer talent, Brit will never touch Christina and they both know it. It took Christina a little while to realize she didn't have to compete but I think watching Justin do his thing did wonders for Ms. Aguilera.

I say all that to lead to this - while you will occassionally see the popular show, movie or music being praised here, I do have a reason to do so. At the same token, I will mention stuff that will make you shake your head, nod approvingly, or just curse my name as a demented hack. Whatever, just back it up if you got the heart to come for me, because I'll damn sure have my arguement ready for you.

With all that said, let's get started on those best of 2007 lists, shall we? This one, if you hadn't guess will be the music lists. Some other changes from the norm: I'm not doing a best singles catagory but we'll get into that in a minute. What I replaced it with is a top ten honorable mentions in terms of what got me thru 2007 whether it be old or new. It just happens to be what I was diggin at the time. And singles and albums are included in that listing. The catagories are Hip-Hop, R&B and Albums of the Year, plus my 2007 Desert Island Playlist.

Why no singles? Because there were too many. Blame Apple.

Yes, I said it.

Apple with iTunes did the one thing record companies thought they had killed. They bought back the power of the single. By charging .99 cents a song, you don't have to buy the whole CD, just the songs you like. Sounds familiar? I'm sure it does. Back in the old dark days, it was called a "single". The recording companies were losing money from the single. Cost of product vs. consumer spending... you know, basically it cost too much to create and distribute because the consumer weren't buying enough. Then iTunes comes along and charges basically a dollar a song, and (this "and" is monumental) lets the consumer have a preview listen of the songs on the album. Which means pick and choose time and some songs that weren't going to be videos, etc, now have new life. Downside is that if you have three good songs on your album, or you just want the video/hit radio singles, then that's all you'll purchase.

There were fucking singles out the wazoo this year and damn it, I'm not getting into all that on it's own. I'm old, tired and I'm running out of meds. So when you see a single song grouped in with an album, it's because this is my list and that song was important to me and more than likely a lot of other people. I tend to go popular for my singles....

Anyway, this post is rapidly becoming it's own post so lets just call it the Best Of 2007 Explaination Post.

The lists are ready, I just have to clean them up. They'll be up soon...
